Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847, in Edinburgh, Scotland. His family was famous for their work in the field of elocution and speech correction. His grandfather, Alexander Melville Bell, published a treatise on Visible Speech, which described a system of symbols for all spoken sounds.

His father, Alexander Bell, was a professor of elocution at the University of Edinburgh and gave private elocution lessons. His mother, Eliza Grace Symonds Bell, was a competent singer. Bell’s parents devoted themselves to their children’s education at home.

Bell’s mother provided him with his first lessons in elocution and speech correction. She also tutored him in reading and spelling. Bell’s father taught him the mechanics of speech and elocution. He also shared with his son his own love of books and reading. Bell’s education continued at the Edinburgh Royal High School.

He was an unruly student and was once expelled for climbing onto the roof of the school. He was later reinstated and graduated in 1865. Bell’s parents hoped that he would follow in their footsteps and become a teacher of elocution and speech correction.

However, Bell had other ideas. He was interested in science and wanted to become an inventor. In 1867, Bell began studying at the University of Edinburgh. He soon became interested in the new science of acoustics. He also began to experiment with ways to transmit sound waves through the air.

In 1876, Bell patented the telephone. This invention made him famous and wealthy. He also established the Bell Telephone Company. Bell continued his work in acoustics and science. He invented the photophone, which transmitted sound waves through the air using light. He also did important work in the field of aviation. He helped develop the ironclad warship and the hydrofoil boat.

Bell was also a generous man. He established the Volta Bureau to promote the education of the deaf. He also founded the American Association to Promote the Teaching of Speech to the Deaf. Bell died in 1922 at the age of 75. He left a legacy of important inventions and a commitment to helping those with disabilities.

Dyslexia Fonts

Using a Dyslexia Font will encourage your ability to read.  Trying to stop the letters from flipping or reversing while reading is more difficult than just learning to read the letters upside down.  If you read the letters upside down, you can still gain ‘normal’ reading retention.    

If you use a Dyslexia Font you will be able to see the letters clearer.  When you use fonts that have differentiating differences you are able to read more effectively.  If the b, d and p look identical in the font you will not be able to read it as readily if you are Dyslexic.
